17-4 Stainless Steel Bar Cond-A, H1150, H1150D
Grade 17-4 stainless steel is a precipitation-hardening alloy with a broad range of applications in the oil and gas, petrochemical, food processing, aerospace, pump, marine, chemical, and metalworking industries. Available in numerous formulations, including H1150 and H1150D condition, this versatile and durable stainless steel product is an economical choice for tasks and project requirements demanding high strength and mid-range corrosion resistance.
Performance Characteristics
Grade 17-4 Cond-A, H1150 & H1150D stainless steel contains significant amounts of chromium, nickel, and copper, along with trace amounts of manganese, carbon, sulfur, phosphorus, silicon, and columbium/tantalum. The specific performance characteristics of 17-4 stainless steel include:
- High tensile & yield strength maintained in temperatures as hot as 570° F
- Moderate resistance to atmospheric & acidic corrosion (equivalent to the corrosion resistance of stainless steel alloys 304 & 430)
- Heat treatability for increased strength of up to 180 ksi
- Not recommended for use in extremely cold or cryogenic temperature ranges
Annealed heat treatments are conducted at a range of specific temperatures to alter default hardness and performance characteristics. The H1150 and H1150D grades have been exposed to temperatures in the 1140° to 1160° range before being air-cooled. This technique improves the strength of the alloys while enacting slight density increases.
Common Applications
17-4 stainless can be used for a variety of applications and industries. It is normally used for applications that require high strength and corrosion resistance. It is frequently used for applications including:
- Pump Shaft Quality Bars (PSQ)
- Bearings
- Nuclear reactors
- Chemical process components
- Gas and aircraft turbines
- Castings
- Valves
